Adnan Januzaj didn't show the desire or attitude you need to progress, claims Borussia Dortmund boss Thomas Tuchel

Borussia Dortmund boss Thomas Tuchel has hit out at Adnan Januzaj for showing a lack of desire during his loan spell away from Manchester United. 

The Belgian is regarded as one of the best young players at Old Trafford, but did not start a league match for Dortmund during his five-month spell at the German club. 

There was no release clause inserted into Januzaj's loan contract when it was signed, but both clubs agreed that it was in their best interests to terminate the deal which saw the 20-year-old return to Manchester earlier this week.

And Tuchel believes Januzaj's attitude was a major reason for his spell in Germany coming to a premature end. 

The Dortmund boss told Sportbild: 'It is a pity he did not show the desire and attitude you need to progress at his age.

'My feeling was that he never was completely with us, that a part of him always stayed in Manchester and he compared everything here with United.

'We were not able to help him to shake that off.'

United manager Louis van Gaal says he believes Januzaj's talent despite his frustrating Dortmund spell

United boss Louis van Gaal will give the 20-year-old another opportunity to impress, but he will have to turn out in a couple of Under-21 games first to regain his fitness.

'I believe in the talent of Adnan Januzaj,' Van Gaal said.

'I said (in August) it would be very difficult to play matches in Dortmund and unfortunately I was right.

'He has trained already this morning. But he didn't play so many 90-minute matches in one season and he has to show his fitness in the second team.

'We have to wait and see if his (clearance) papers are right. If he can play Monday in the second team (at Reading) he shall play in the second team.'
