A SYDNEY man who allegedly posted derogatory comments about a Sydney woman on Facebook has pleaded not guilty to the charge of using a carrier service to menace, harass or cause offence.
Zane Alchin, 25, was charged in August after he allegedly made rape threats on Facebook, during a feud sparked when one of his friends, Chris Hall, shared a screenshot of a Sydney woman’s Tinder profile.
Her Tinder bio referenced a lyric from Canadian singer Drake’s hit song Only. “Type of girl that will suck you dry and then eat some lunch with you,” her bio read.
Mr Hall posted the screenshot on his Facebook page with the caption, “Stay classy ladies. I’m surprised she’d still be hungry for lunch.” Mr Hall was later fired from his job for violating his employer’s social media policy.
Mr Alchin allegedly made derogatory comments on several of these posts, one of which allegedly read: “It’s people like you who make it clear women should never have been given rights.”
News.com.au has chosen not to republish the rest of Mr Alchin’s alleged comments due to their extremely graphic nature.
Zane Alchin’s lawyer entered the plea at Newtown Local Court today following speculation he would plead guilty to the charge.
The case will go to trial on March 1 and there will be an evidence reading in court on February 9.
In August, the woman’s friends formed an activist group called Sexual Violence Won’t Be Silenced (SVWBS) and campaigned for Mr Alchin to be charged.
With the case going to trial, they hope it will offer the NSW legal system a chance to set a precedent for incidents of online abuse.
“This will be a landmark case, and will give our judicial system the opportunity to put their foot down in regards to sexual harassment and violence against women,” SVWBS spokeswoman Paloma Brierley Newton said in a statement.
“Violence against women can’t be changed until we change the way we treat women and respect them in every day life, online is not inherently different to real life, it’s merely a different medium,” she said.
