KYLIE KROST and ILYA ARONOVICH
Dress: Pallas Couture bespoke gown, Paddington
Honeymoon: Two weeks in Ko Samui, Thailand
When and where married: December 6, 2015, ceremony at Orso Bayside, followed by reception at Zest, The Spit.
WERE it not for a fateful night at a mutual friend’s birthday party in 2012, Kylie Krost, 26, and Ilya Aronovich, 29, could have just remained acquaintances.
“We knew each other about 10 years ago,” Kylie says.
“We’ve known each other for a long time, but we didn’t hang out all the time. We just happened to be at the same birthday, it was fate.
“We started talking and that’s where it all began.”
While Ilya was keen, Kylie admitted that the first date took a little convincing.
“I had never thought of him like that,” she says.
“Initially I was a bit like ‘I don’t know’; we’d just spoken and he asked me out to dinner, but we started dating and here we are married.”
Kylie says the romantic relationship grew slowly.
“He was clear that he wanted to spend more time together, and it was definitely led more by him initially, than it was by me,” she says.
“I guess a bit of time had gone by, we were both older so we just saw each other in a different light.
“He’s really caring and selfless, and puts me first, and those seem like really good qualities for the person you want to make your life partner.”
The couple discovered a shared love of food and eating out during their courtship, and when it came time to propose it led Ilya to arrange a special dinner at their favourite restaurant, Nomad, in Surry Hills.
“It was just after my birthday in January last year, and when we sat down he had organised with the restaurant to have them print a special menu,” Kylie says.
“I opened the menu and I didn’t notice it, I started talking about what we should we order. Halfway down the page it said ‘Kylie, will you marry me?’ The first thought I had was why is my name in the menu?”
Kylie was initially shocked, but managed to eventually respond.
“I was a bit gobsmacked, but I obviously said yes. I could barely eat after that happened,” she says.
When it came to organising the wedding, the couple were also keen to incorporate their love of food in their big day.
They started with a traditional Jewish wedding ceremony at Orso Bayside, and then were joined by their 220 guests for the reception at Zest at The Spit.
“With food, we wanted lots of it. With entrees, when everyone walked in, it was buffet style with different food stations.
“We had people making liquid nitrogen ice cream, which was really cool.”
The couple also had a vodka luge, created from an ice sculpture embossed with their initial. It was a big hit with guests.
“There was a waiter behind the sculpture, pouring bottles of vodka through the ice and people would collect the shots at the bottom.” Kylie says.
“Because Ilya comes from a Ukrainian background, drinking vodka is a big part of how you celebrate in his culture. We wanted to pay tribute to that in a creative way.
“It was definitely a gathering point of the night.”
Traditional Jewish music was played by a live band and guests were also entertained by the John Field Band. Kylie says the couple wanted to ensure the day had a relaxed and romantic theme, with pastel flowers, candles and floral arrangements hanging from the ceiling.
“Even though it was a wedding, it made it a little less formal,” Kylie says.
“We both loved how warm and fun the day was.”
