A PHOTOGRAPH of a couple who survived a major accident that “should have chopped our bodies in half” has been shared more than eighty thousand times online.

Tennessee couple Arika Stovall and Hunter Hanks were driving to Nashville on New Year’s Day when they crashed their Toyota Tundra at more than 130 kilometres an hour.

Shockingly, the couple survived the wreck and were released from hospital within two days prompting them to share lengthy posts on Facebook about their recovery.

“Three seconds. That’s how long we had from the moment we drifted off the road until the truck hit the pilar (sic) at 85mph (136 kilometres an hour).” Ms Stovall wrote.

“In three seconds Hunter had to handle a situation that would either kill us immediately or save our lives. He keeps beating himself up for my pain but he saved my life. He keeps saying ‘I should have protected you and I didn’t do that’ but he did exactly what he needed to do to make sure my life didn’t end.”

Ms Stovall has suffered panic attacks since but is shocked at how little harm they came to in a crash that “should have chopped our bodies in half”.

“Here is the miracle part: no broken bones, concussions that lasted not even 24 hours, no internal damage, and just a few stitches in my knee and Hunter’s face,” she said.

“Only that after an accident that paramedics wonder how we didn’t die instantly and a truck that looks like it’s been through a tree grinder. We’re both already released from the hospital not even 48 hours after entering.”

However the couple have also come under fire for the religious references in their online comments which credit God for helping to protect them.

Mr Hanks said it’s been “truly overwhelming” to receive such support and he was working to individually reply to those who have followed up with criticism or questions about religion.

“To all of you with the hate comments, I strongly ask you to keep them coming. It just shows you read the story and care enough to even give your thoughts, leading to others to see and read the message as well,” he said.

The couple will return to university today.
