A MELBOURNE woman got a nasty surprise when she opened a packet of grapes to find a huntsman spider trapped inside.
Not only that, the enormous arachnid appeared to be pregnant.
Rachael Buckley, who bought the grapes from a Woolworths store in Melbourne, shared a terrifying photo of her purchase on social media — and it’s enough to put you off green grapes for life.
“Not only was this spider in there, but also was a decent sized spider egg sac so it looks as though it had been breeding in the bag. Definitely not my idea of fresh food,” Ms Buckley wrote on Facebook.
The supermarket chain has responded to Ms Buckey’s complaint, saying it is looking into it, while experts have deemed it a “highly uncommon” place for the huntsman spider to lay eggs.
“It’s certainly not prime real estate for a huntsman,” zoologist at Northern Gulf Resource Management Group Christopher Jolly told Daily Mail Australia.
“They are generally docile but they are most defensive when guarding their young: this is probably the one time to be cautious of a bite.”
While the bite of huntsman is not dangerous to humans, the frightening appearance of the fast-moving intruders, and their tendency to take up residency in kitchens, living rooms and vehicles, is enough to scare the living daylights out of anyone.
