AUSTRALIA’S Lowy family are eagerly awaiting the opening of their iconic Westfield shopping mall located in one of the most sacred sites in the US.
The two billion dollar project located at New York’s new World Trade Centre will open later this year and the Lowy family hope it will be the world’s most productive shopping centre reported The Australian.
“Three hundred thousand people a day will come through the transport here (subway and train hub), the capacity of three MCGs,” said Westfield co-chief executive Steven Lowy in an exclusive interview with The Australian.
The new centre sits beneath 3.6 million square metres of office towers that are either complete or being rebuilt and houses 107 retailers.
And the mall is sure to make an impression thanks to impressive architecture which boasts an incredible ‘Oculus’ dome.
“The Calatrava building, (the Santiago Calatrava-designed glass and curved-column Oculus which forms the roof of the mall) will become one of the world’s iconic pieces of architecture in one of the most sacred sites in the US, if not the world,’’ Mr Lowy told The Australian.
Westfield bought the World Trade Centre mall in July 2001, only months before the September 11 terrorist attack.
Some of the stores returning to the centre are Victoria’s Secret and Duane Reade, a chain of pharmacy and convenience stores. But new stores will also be coming to Westfield such as food emporium Eataly and Apple which will have a two-level store.
A large open events space sits below the Oculus roof structure and will host events such as retailer and fashion occasions, theatre performances, film premieres and ice skating.
