EVERYONE who uses Tinder gets an internal “desirability score”. But would you really want to find out yours if you could?
Fast Company journalist Austin Carr says he has regretted finding out his internal score, which Tinder execs call an “elo score”, a term that chess players use to rank a player’s skill level.
Tinder chief executive Sean Rad told Carr that the score was not a measure of attractiveness but one of “desirability”.
“It’s not just how many people swipe right on you,” he said.
The desirability score also goes up if you fill out more information about yourself.

Jonathan Badeen, Tinder’s VP of product, said it was the same sort of algorithm that video games like Warcraft use.
“I used to play a long time ago, and whenever you play somebody with a really high score, you end up gaining more points than if you played someone with a lower score,” he said. “It’s a way of essentially matching people and ranking them more quickly and accurately based on who they are being matched up against.”
Carr said he thought about it a lot before deciding to get his Tinder score. The analytics also show things like how many people have swiped left on you — in other words, how many rejections you have received without ever knowing about them.
Carr’s score of 946 he was told is “on the upper end of average”.
“Something about ‘upper end of average’ didn’t do wonders for my ego,” he said.
