Best, worst and wackiest Super Bowl adverts

Take a look at some of the best ads for Super Bowl 2016 from a real life hot dog to a Mountain Dew baby monkey.

Hot Dogs and ketchup are a match made in heaven.

SUPER Bowl day is here, and while the eyes of NFL fans are fixed on the championship game between the Panthers and Broncos, for many the real entertainment lies elsewhere.

We’re not talking about Lady Gaga singing the American national anthem, we’re talking the world’s most attention-grabbing adverts.

This year’s advertisers paid a whopping $5 million for a 30-second spot during live screening of the 50th annual Super Bowl, which last year became the most-watched American television program in history with an average audience of 114.4 million viewers.

So it’s not surprising that companies have gone all out in a bid to create the most noteworthy ads, ranging from the cute to the funny and bizarre.

Many companies released adverts online early in the hopes of generating extra buzz, including gems such as Heinz’s ‘Meet the Ketchups’, featuring what has to be the largest contingent of Dachshunds ever seen on television.

Mountain Dew Kickstart’s ‘Puppymonkeybaby’ hybrid creature — “three awesome things combined”— is equal parts weird, adorable and catchy.

Not everyone was a fan of the creature, which on Twitter was compared with an ISIS recruiter.

Uplifting messages and “cause advertising” are the order of the day for companies seeking to project a socially conscious image.

A Budweiser advert features British actor Helen Mirren telling people why drink driving is a bad idea, while Colgate Palmolive tells people to “save water” by turning the tap off while they brush their teeth.

Of course, celebs feature heavily, from Amy Schumer (Bud Light) to Ryan Reynolds (Hyundai) and Liam Neeson (LG).

In retrospect, it would seem inevitable that a telephone company like T-Mobile would capitalise on Drake’s ubiquitous Hotline Bling lyric, “you used to call me on my cell phone”.

Australian filmmaker Peter Carstairs has drawn a mixed reaction with his Doritos advert, which won the snack purveyor’s annual ‘Crash the Super Bowl’ commercial competition.

Carstairs’ advert features a dad-to-be whose choice of snack during his partner’s ultrasound has unexpected results.

Melbourne’s Carstairs beat two Los Angeles-based film makers to the $1.4 million ($US1 million) prize money, along with the incredible exposure of having his work beamed into living rooms around the world.

Runner-up Jacob Chase’s Doritos ad is a dog’s day out adventure, showing what lengths a motley crew of canines will go to in order to get their hands on their favourite chips.

And David Rudy’s entry features a series of ill-fated Tinder dates.

The winning ad was unveiled during today’s game.

Taco Bell tried to build buzz, promising to unveil its latest menu item in a Super Bowl ad.

But close watchers of the chain correctly guessed it would be a “Quesalupa”.

Several websites have noted that the creation — which features a cheese-stuffed shell — was tested in Toledo last year.
