Fancy a beer with your all day brekkie? The new McDonald’s outlet in South Korea. Picture: McDonald’s
MACCA’S is jumping on board with the classic burger and beer combo in Asia.
A McDonald’s franchise in South Korea is set to begin selling alcohol in what they hope will boost sales and encourage a younger clientele to dine there, the Korea Herald reports.
The new outlet, which will open on Monday in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, outside of Seoul, will be the first in Asia to sell booze.
The venue is said to be the ideal place for the fast-food giant to start slinging beer as the Pangyo Techno Valley area draws a “young, hip, well-paid and tech-driven” audience, according to reports.
The 90-seat restaurant will serve brews with its gourmet build-your-own burger, already available in other locations in Seoul. If successful, it plans to open similar stores in the trendy Gangnam and Sinchon areas.
The move to add alcohol to the menu comes after a recent report revealed that our party hard Asian neighbours consume twice as much booze as Russians, an average of 14 shots of hard liquor a week. In fact, in a country of 50 million, around 1.6m are alcoholics.
The legal drinking age in South Korea is 19 and beer, which recently became the top-selling alcoholic beverage in Korea, sells for around $1 a bottle. Soju, the national drink, retails for just $2 a bottle.
But selling booze with your burger is nothing new for Macca’s. The international fast-food chain began serving beer in Germany back in 1971, while French eateries also sell beer and wine, which is even available at the drive-through. Customers can also grab a beer with their meal of choice in locations across the Netherlands and Austria.
The big question we’re all asking is — will Aussies ever see booze added to the menu at their local Macca’s?
