HAVE you ever wondered how long you could live on all the food in your local supermarket?
Well, now there’s an answer.
A scientist has predicted the average supermarket contains enough provisions to keep a person fed and watered for over half a century, The Sun reports.
Author Dr Lewis Dartnell reckons that larger stores are stocked with enough non-perishable goods to last one adult a whopping 55 years.
The astrobiology scientist conducted the research as part of a study on how the United Kingdom could survive an apocalypse — ahead of his appearance at next month’s The Big Bang UK Young Scientists and Engineers Fair.
Research has also discovered that 36 per cent of the population keep a bag of essential items in case of disaster.
Food came out top on people’s lists of items to grab in an emergency with 61 per cent of people saying they would bring it with them, mobile phones would be picked up by 47 per cent and 53 per cent of people said they would grab medical supplies.
Dr Dartnell, author of The Knowledge: How To Rebuild Our World From Scratch, said: “Clearly we shouldn’t be worrying 24/7 about a potential apocalypse but it’s interesting to take a snapshot of where we are now and how we’d fare — individually and as a society.
“People’s survival instincts are strong but without a greater focus on Stem (science, technology, engineering and maths) skills, the speed at which we’d return to ‘society as we know it’ would be seriously impeded.
“Rather than duck and cover, the country needs to know how to stand and recover from any disaster.”
