BBC bosses could be banned from 'advertising' hit shows such as Strictly Come Dancing under controversial plans being considered by Culture Secretary John Whittingdale.
He is looking at sweeping new restrictions on the BBC's ability to 'cross-promote' its output across its huge array of TV channels and radio stations – giving it an 'unfair' competitive advantage over ITV.
The crackdown could extend to a total ban on one BBC channel plugging shows on another channel or the 'lesser sanction' of restricting the cross-promotion to 'worthier' public service programmes.

A Department for Culture, Media and Sports (DCMS) source said: 'It could be that we say: 'Less flagging up of the next episode of Strictly or Countryfile and more promotion Today in Parliament'.'
The source added: 'This is something we're seriously considering.
'We haven't made a decision yet but the sheer scale of the BBC's channels and platforms give it huge scope to cross-promote its output. Much of this is entirely sensible but it's only right we take action where it may not be fair.'
Conservative MP Andrew Bridgen backed the move, saying: 'As well as being plain unfair on commercial broadcasters, announcements between programmes about 'next week on BBC2 we have this or that' are very irritating and need to be curbed.'
The BBC last night defended the practice of cross-promotion, saying: 'The BBC is committed to all audiences and has a duty to ensure licence fee payers are aware of all our programmes and services.'
