It should be well-oiled but the Brussels machine came to a halt once again as one unfortunate MEP found out this week.
Leaving the European Parliament building in Brussels, Paul Brannen found himself trapped in a lift - and took the opportunity to record his 'last testimony'.
The MEP for the North East of England was leaving the building late in the evening when his lift came to a sudden halt on its way down somewhere between the 13th and third floors.

In the video, Mr Brennan says he feels 'slightly disconcerted' as the doors open mid way down - leaving him facing a metal wall.
'A slightly strange end to the day', he adds.
He used his ordeal to contemplate his final moments and record a message for his family.
In the hilarious video Mr Brannen says dryly: 'It's slightly disconcerting, truth be told.
'The lift's now rattling up and down a bit and there was quite a bit of dust when we came to a sudden stop.
'When I say 'we', actually I'm the only person in the lift. This may well be my last testimony.
'But I have thoroughly enjoyed being an MEP and it's been great.
'Love to the family and so long. Always look on the bright side of life.'
