Newborn baby dies days after mother was 'turned away' from Calderdale maternity unit

A newborn baby died after his mother was 'turned away' from a hospital maternity unit because there were 'no beds' available.

Sarah Ellis went into labour on November 7, 2014, and claims she was turned away from the Calderdale Royal Hospital in Halifax because there was 'no bed available', and was told she would need to go to Huddersfield Birthing Centre instead.

Because the 28-year-old was not in an advanced stage of labour she was sent home but later that day she could no longer feel her baby moving.

She returned to Calderdale Royal Hospital where she was admitted to the Maternity Assessment Unit.

Six hours later she was examined by a consultant and underwent an emergency Caesarean section to deliver baby Gino, who was born on November 9.

He was gravely ill and had to be resuscitated twice.

Gino was placed on a life support machine but, tragically, Sarah and her partner Adam Asquith were advised to withdraw treatment and Gino died on November 12.

An inquest into his death is due to start on Monday.

His devastated parents have instructed specialist medical negligence lawyers at Irwin Mitchell's Leeds office to investigate the care provided during the birth by the Calderdale & Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust.

Emily Whisker, representing the family, said: 'Sarah and Adam have had an extremely distressing time since Gino's death and they want to know exactly what happened during Gino's delivery and why he was in such a poor condition.

'They have a number of concerns about the care provided at Calderdale & Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust and they hope that the inquest will provide them with an opportunity to learn more about the events leading up to Gino's death and whether any lessons can be learned from the tragedy.'

The inquest will start at Bradford Coroner's Court on Monday.
