'Oh b*******!' Tory MP apologises to the Commons after swearing at a colleague for raising 'scare stories' about the EU

A Tory MP apologised today after shouting 'oh b*******' at another backbencher's question about the benefits of the EU.

Michael Fabricant made the light hearted apology for using the 'eight letter word beginning with b and ending cks' after his outburst was clearly picked up on the Commons microphones.

Former minister Jonathan Djanogly provoked the shout with a question about Britain's law firms could lose £1.7billion because of a Brexit vote.

Tory Michael Fabricant, left, volunteered an apology for his outburst today despite Speaker John Bercow, right, insisting he would have let the 'unseemly' incident pass

Mr Fabricant - an ex government whip - exclaimed 'ooh b*******' as Mr Djanogly resumed his seat.

The rules about what is and isn't allowed to be said in the House of Commons are complex and entirely within the gift of the chair.

Speaker John Bercow suggested today he would have been prepared to let the remark pass as Mr Fabricant had made it while heckling from a seated position.

Raising a point of order with Mr Bercow, Mr Fabricant said: 'May I personally apologise to you for inadvertently perhaps, or through frustration, using an eight-letter word beginning with b and ending with cks.

'[It happened] when a colleague of mine was raising yet another scare story about what a disaster it would be if we were to leave the European Union.

'It was unseemly.'

Mr Bercow replied: 'I had heard the utterance of the honourable gentleman.

'Precisely because of its unseemliness I did not wish to draw attention to it.

'However, the honourable gentleman has now done so and there is nothing further that requires to be said.'

Justice Secretary Michael Gove - a leading member of the Brexit camp - was in fits of laughter on the front bench during the exchange.

The light hearted apology left the handful of MPs in the Commons today in fits of laughter as it was responded to by Mr Bercow
