These are the horrific injuries of a disabled man who was attacked by his neighbour because he complained about his dog's barking.

Matthew Sheehan is in a coma after being beaten Raymond Burrell six months ago near their homes in Adamsdown, Cardiff.

The 34-year-old had confronted Burrell about his pet Staffordshire Bull Terrier when he was attacked, Cardiff Crown Court heard.

Mr Sheehan, who requires a walking stick, remains in a coma and suffered bruising to the brain alongside multiple facial injuries.

In September neigbours heard him shouting 'shut up' towards 38-year-old Burrell's home before deciding to complain at his front door.

Loud banging was later heard from inside the flat where Burrell lived, they said.

Prosecutor Michael Jones told the court of one witness who claims to have heard the 'merciless' attack.

'The same neighbour said he was woken by loud banging around 7am coming from Mr Sheehan’s flat.

'From his window he heard shouting, screaming and a thudding noise as though someone was being kicked,' he said.

Investigators discovered DNA belonging to Mr Sheehan on Burrell's shoe following his arrest.

He was convicted of inflicting grievous bodily harm at Cardiff Crown Court and is awaiting sentencing.

Despite being cleared of attempted murder, Judge Paul Thomas warned he was considering imposing a life sentence for the crime.

Speaking after his conviction a spokesman for Mr Sheehan's family told of their desperate hopes that he will recover from the attack.

'We don’t know what the future holds for Matt and as his life has changed beyond recognition.

'It may be that he will never be able to interact with or enjoy his family and friends again.

'It is difficult to understand how someone could inflict such horrific injuries on another person, and when it is your own flesh and blood it has happened to it is even harder to deal with.

'It is now time to put all our energy into helping Matt as much as we can.'

Neighbours said they heard 'thudding' and 'banging' coming from Mr Burrell's flat in Cardiff after seeing Mr Sheehan approach him. Above, the estate where the pair live in Cardiff
