The RSPCA was plunged deeper into chaos last night as a third trustee quit in frustration amid claims that the charity is being badly run.
Accountant Karen Harley resigned from the ruling council of Britain’s biggest animal charity as an internal review demanded by the Charity Commission gets under way.
The Mail on Sunday understands that treasurer Ms Harley told friends she feared her reputation would be damaged by internal wrangling.

‘She made clear to colleagues that, while treasurer, she felt decisions had been made without her inclusion,’ said one. ‘As an accountant, and a trustee with other charities, she also feared her reputation would be tarnished. She is extremely frustrated at the way the society is being run.’
However, the friend suggested she could return if the RSPCA put its house in order.
Her resignation is a further blow to the charity, already reeling at criticism of its animal welfare work and failed prosecutions over alleged breaches of the Hunting Act.
Her decision to quit follows the resignations of fellow trustees Chris Laurence and Sally Phillips. Mr Laurence, a former chief vet, left over the way the charity was run, and Ms Phillips quit over its animal welfare policy and cuts to frontline services.

Ms Harley, 57, declined to comment last night but the RSPCA said: ‘We can confirm one of our trustees has resigned from the council. We would like to thank Karen for her service and contribution to the society.’
Meanwhile, the giant Unite union has also attempted to trigger a shake-up of the RSPCA’s command structure.
It is said to be angry that staff members are facing the brunt of cuts, while the 25-strong council is unwilling to review its own procedures.
