The Met Office has predicted that the cold snap will continue into next week before temperatures start to get milder.
Today the Peak District, the Pennines, the Cotswolds and the Scottish Highlands have been blanketed in thick snow, and drivers are being warned about potentially treacherous conditions on icy roads.
After heavy snow coated large parts of Northern England on Friday, Storm Jake is set to move slowly down into the South East and central areas will be hit with rain, sleet and snow.

Despite some brightness during the day people are urged to wrap up warm to protect against a brisk northerly wind.
Motorists are further being advised of hazardous driving conditions as the wintry showers take their toll with ice readily forming on untreated surfaces with the potential for some difficult driving conditions.
Temperatures overnight will be chilly with widespread frost and a risk of icy patches come morning. A yellow weather warning could be issued later today, the Met Office said.
Forecaster for the Met Office Helen Roberts said: 'The general trend is that it will be a cold weekend for most and a cold start to the week but then gradually turning milder.

'The rest of today there is a mix of rain, sleet and snow across the South East and the East of England that could bring further snow and sleet on hills.'
By Sunday it is forecast to be a drier day for many but will remain cloudy, and bright spells will break through at times, with showers likely around East Anglia.
Monday will be a brighter day with the occasional shower affecting the North East coast and western parts of Scotland but will remain predominantly dry.
Tuesday will see a change in the weather with only a few spots of rain, as temperatures gradually get milder.
Airports across England are operating as normal, after the storms on Friday which caused Leeds Bradford airport to close temporarily.

Snow caused chaos across some areas of the country yesterday, with 78 schools closed in Oldham, another 50 in East Lancashire, eight in Leeds and 28 more in the wider West Yorkshire area. Elsewhere there were 60 closures in Bradford, 40 more in Tameside and a further 14 in Bury, Rochdale and Stockport combined.
With temperatures set to continue to drop over the next few weeks, Coral is also odds-on at 1-2 for this year to be coldest Easter since records began, beating the previous low of -12.5C set in 2013.
'The latest odds suggest that this is most likely to be the coldest March since records began in the UK and punters agree as we continue to take a flurry of bets on the record going,' said Coral's John Hill.
'With Easter just a few weeks away, the betting also indicates the temperatures aren't going to pick up any time soon as it is odds-on to be the coldest Easter ever, beating the previous low set in 2013,' added Hill.
