Keng Lye creates hyper realistic artworks of sea creatures

These are the startling works of art so realistic the artist has been accused of animal cruelty.

Keng Lye, 52, uses resin and acrylic paint to create the 3D real-life artworks of sea creatures.

But he says his artwork is so realistic people often see it and think he has been cruel to live animals.

He said: 'Many people have said that I am cruel to keep live fish in a tiny bowl and some even think that I poured resin over live fish, in the name of art.

'I am not sure if these comments are serious or not, but most people are generally amazed by how realistic my artworks are.

Lye, from Singapore, began experimenting with hyper-realistic artwork when he took a break from his graphic design business, and hasn't looked back.

'When I first started, I used to leave my works all over the house, even in the bathroom,' he said.

'One day my friend came over and asked 'why do you have dead fish in the bathroom?'

'This is usually the reaction I get, especially from the internet.'

The shocking comments about Keng's artwork have been made both by people who have seen his artwork for real and those who have seen images of it shared on social media.

Keng's friend then challenged him to create similar artwork using resin.

Keng, who has already held an exhibition in Scotts Square, Singapore, and plans on showing his pieces again later this month, said perfecting his craft is a never-ending process he learns more about each day.

He said: 'I base my works on everyday objects and nature, sometimes I find a patch of thick moss or an old, weathered wooden box and it inspires me.

'I don't consciously work in terms of creating a series, most times my works are a result of what I personally would like to see.

'I really don't have any long-term plans. I just live from day-to-day and am very happy to see what each day brings with it.'
