THERE was not a dry eye in sight at this little girl’s first swimming race.
After losing her lower right arm in a tragic incident, eight-year-old Thalia Standley ended up being the star of her first school swimming carnival earlier this week.
This video from her Facebook recovery page, Reaching Thalia, shows her competing in the carnival at Valentine Public School in Lake Macquarie, NSW, as a boisterous crowd cheers her on.
Just days before her eighth birthday last year, Thalia Standley lost her arm in a tragic attack by a neighbour’s dog.
Thalia was sitting on her neighbour’s retaining wall, which had a fence on top. A dog poked its way through a gap and took hold of the fingers on her right hand.
The dog was able to drag the little girl’s right arm through the gap and take off a portion of her arm above the wrist before help could arrive.
She was forced to have her arm amputated just below the elbow, with the NSW Hunter Region community rallying around the family, as they struggled with increasing medical costs.
After nine surgeries, Thalia is recovering and participating in sports.
“The whole school has been right behind the family and right behind Thalia to get back to as close to normal as humanly possible,” her mum, Sally, told The Daily Telegraph via a family spokeswoman.
“They’ve gone over and above to help.”
“Thalia is one of those kids who will try something first before she asks anyone for help — she would rather give it a go than ask for help.
“She’s just such an independent little thing.”
