Longtime coming: He revealed he won't be returning to the X Factor when it returns later this year. But for Nick Grimshaw, 31, the writing could have already been on the wall as long ago as the series opener last August
'Grimmy has been a dead man walking for a long time. His time on the X Factor was numbered from day one.
'Simon rightly wanted to attract a younger audience so he approached Grimmy and Rita Ora because he thought they would allow the show to appeal to that demographic.
'So there's no doubt he wanted him at first, but that all changed almost immediately.'
The source added that there was talk of cutting Grimmy mid-series but the embarrassment it would have caused coupled with improved performances by the DJ meant he made it through until the end.
Unimpressed: Simon Cowell, 56, reportedly made up his mind regarding Grimmy's future on the show following the negative response to the DJ's first pre-recorded appearance
Oddly, the insider noted that the live audiences at the auditions responded well to Grimmy, but that didn't translate on-screen, which ultimately sealed his fate.
And it was suggested the show was purposely edited to portray Grimmy in a negative light. However, the source moved quickly to dispel the rumours, stating that Simon wouldn't jeopardize the show's success.
MailOnline has contacted a representative of the X Factor for comment.
The reports are at odds with Grimmy's announcement, in which he told his Radio One breakfast show listeners on Friday that he 'loved' all the judges and that his decision wasn't a 'diss to the show'.
Saag aloo on a Saturday: Ever the joker, Grimmy bemoaned the fact that his appearance on the show prevented him from indulging in tasty takeaways on the weekend
He explained: 'We announced on this show last year that I was going to do X Factor, and maybe now we should say that I'm not going to do X Factor.
'We just had a think about it and sat down, and I just thought it's one of those things that I loved, I did love it, its not a diss to the show, it's not me storming out of X Factor being like "screw you Cheryl"! It's a great show and I loved it.'
The star told how the opportunity to take part was a 'once in a lifetime style thing' and reassured fans that all was fine, saying 'it's not like bad blood'.
Ever the joker, Grimmy bemoaned the fact that his appearance on the show prevented him from indulging in tasty takeaways on the weekend.
'You can't have a curry when you're on it on a Saturday night, because you're there,' he joked.

Full of colour: Nick looked to have taken inspiration from Zayn Malik and Joe Jonas when it came to his hair do
'Simon promised me curry!'
The former judge built up a strong rapport with the rest of the panel during his time on the show and was effusive in his praise of them.
He gushed: 'I loved Simon, and I loved Cheryl, and I loved Rita, I loved everyone that worked on it, and all the boys as well - the mentoring stuff I really really loved.
'I genuinely loved it, there's no bad blood. I just want to watch it on the telly.'

The cheeky chappy couldn't resist one more tongue in cheek comment. When asked if he had any words of wisdom for his replacement, he responded: 'Don't do it.'
However, he quickly added: 'Just kidding. It is really fun, its a riot.... It's not just Saturdays and Sundays, it's every single day so it becomes your life. You'll have a great time.'
Grimmy was spotted taking a stroll around London later in the day, wearing a loud floral shirt which he teamed with torn jeans.
Going for a rock n' roll look, he wore a pair of Vans high-tops and black shades, while his coloured hair appeared to have been inspired by Nick Jonas and Zayn Malik.
Simon Cowell has reportedly axed X Factor co-presenter Caroline Flack, 36, according to The Sun.
The reports come as Grimmy confirmed he had quit the show, despite claims that he too had been axed.
A spokesperson for the radio DJ said: 'After careful consideration, Nick has decided to rule himself out as a judge on this year’s X Factor.
Shake-up: Simon Cowell has reportedly AXED presenter Caroline Flack (second from right) in a bid to shake-up the X Factor as judge Nick Grimshaw (second from left) confirms he has QUIT
'He loved working on last year’s series alongside Rita, Cheryl and Simon but it was very much a once in a lifetime experience.
'He remains a massive fan of the show and is looking forward to watching it this year.'
An X Factor spokesperson said in a statement: 'Nick was a great mentor on last year’s series. He did a fantastic job with the boys’ category and we’d like to thank him for all his hard work. We are sad to see him go but wish him all the best.
'Details for the new series of The X Factor are still being discussed and will be announced in due course.'
A show's source confirmed the news to The Sun, adding that One Direction singer Louis Tomlinson is already in the running to take his place.
They said: 'Louis Tomlinson is very likely to replace Grimmy. He agreed in principle to the job while assisting Simon Cowell during the judges’ houses round last year.
Ruling the roost: The Sun report that Simon Cowell has made some changes in the show following disappointing ratings
Meanwhile, Love Island presenter Caroline remained silent on the matter on Twitter, simply posting on Valentine's Day:
'Are you single on Valentine's Day??? Why not apply for Love Island ... Because we are back baby.'
The news comes after the X Factor failed to garner dramatic figures, with its final episode only pulling in 8.4 million average and 9.9 million in overnight ratings.
While the figure does not take into account consolidated figures, which includes viewers who watch the show on catch-up, online or on mobile phones, last year, last year's final drew in 9.4 million viewers.
'Rule himself out': A spokesperson for the radio DJ said: 'After careful consideration, Nick has decided to rule himself out as a judge on this year’s X Factor'
The 11th series of the talent show has been dogged with criticism following a shake-up to draw younger audiences and inject new blood after nearly a decade on air.
Following December's live final, in one of many technical glitches, Caroline was forced to hit out on Twitter to defend herself and co-host Olly's presenting skills, after the show was marred by issues.
She insisted that she and her 31-year-old co-host were not to blame for the evening's faults after the pair were criticised on social networking, tweeting in defence: 'Not our fault. Technical issue. Get your facts right'.
The new kids on the block: Following December's live final, in one of many technical glitches, Caroline was forced to hit out on Twitter to defend herself and co-host Olly's presenting skills, after the show was marred by issues
So long: While Caroline's departure has been reported, Olly's fate is unknown
After the wrong music was played over the incorrect scene and a faulty sound issue meant Caroline could be heard asking for assistance, Simon was then seen raising his hands in despair to somebody off camera while Olly and Caroline acted to cover up the mistake.
On the show, the blonde beauty looked horrified after the glitch, while music mogul and X Factor boss Simon Cowell reacted in a spectacular fashion.
And while technical errors were not the fault of the hosts, many called for beloved former presenter Dermot O'Leary to be reinstated.
The problems came after Olly was met with outrage earlier in the competition when he prematurely announced the departure of hopeful Monica Michaels.
Could it be? One Direction star Louis Tomlinson is the firm favourite to take over from Grimshaw
The not so dream team: Simon's 2015 panel has split slightly after the departure of Nick and the reported axing of Caroline
