Former X Factor winner Dami Im tipped to compete in Eurovision for Australia following Guy Sebastian's success last year

Season five X Factor winner Dami Im is reportedly set to represent Australia in the 2016 Eurovision contest following Guy Sebastian's success last year.

An announcement on 27-year-old's surprise appointment is expected to be announced on Thursday night.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald there had previously been rumors of ARIA Hall of Fame inductee Tina Arena or Delta Goodrem as possible contenders, but it appears the Dami has pipped them to the post.

The choice not to send Tina, who has had an impressive career and major European success, or Delta who is well-known in the UK, comes as a shock.

Despite being a controversial decision, Australia first competed in the song contest in 2015, sending Sebastian to Austria as a representative, where he finished fifth in the grand final.

His success gave Australia another opportunity to compete in the 2016 semi-final after his performance of Tonight Again impressed the crowed and helped him break into the European music charts.

While Tonight Again came in at number 16 on the ARIA charts in Australia, the song peaked at number 5 in Iceland.

The 2016 Eurovision semi-finals start on May 10 with the grand final taking place on May 14.

Despite winning X Factor in 2013 and releasing three studio albums, Dami has struggled to build on her music career.

She will be supported at Eurovision by her record company Sony, who sent Guy last year and have strong connections to the competition.

The Korean-born, Queensland-raised songstress performed at Carols in the Domain last year and has since kept fans updated through her social media, recently posting that she has been in the studio recording her fourth album.

Last month Dami took to Facebook to share her performance at a concert celebrating Chinese New Year, posting: 'So thrilled to have performed all the way in CHINA for my biggest TV audience of over 200Million viewers.'
